The obituary was direct and startling in its honesty:
"It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the death of our son, Sean Stigberg-Mellman, of 461 Locustfield Road, East Falmouth, MA, on July 10, 2014. Sean was 19 years old and died of an accidental drug overdose."
It went on to describe Sean as "a very sensitive, loving young man, and the most loyal friend anyone could wish to have. In recent years Sean struggled with depression and substance abuse. He was a very active member of AA and NA and was very proud of his sobriety."
Friends and loved ones gathered a few days later for a memorial service that had no formal eulogies. Friends grieved, while adults were asking, "What can we do to protect other children?"
